Obviously, Joan should not have come to this wedding alone. She knew that now. “Stop moping around the house and meet some people,” she had told herself. Well, these people did not want to be met. They did not come alone and did not want to be seen talking to anyone that did. Even Martha wouldn’t talk to her and they were friends. Well, acquaintances and there had been that incident. Joan’s fault, to be sure, but how do you explain a thing like that. It was mean of Martha not to at least acknowledge her. Now she was sweating, why did she always start sweating? No one was talking to her, but it sure felt like everyone was looking at her. How early could you leave a wedding? Not before the ceremony to be sure, but what about right after?
